Methods & Methodologies eLearning Module

This eLearning module provides need-to-know information about methods and methodologies. For the purposes of this project, xAPI is also implemented so that user responses can be tracked.

Audience: Adult learners at a large, public university

Tools: Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator, Articulate Storyline 360, Visual Studio Code, JavaScript, Veracity LRS

Problem & Solution

The client is an instructor and regional director of a national program aimed at recruiting and retaining diverse candidates for advanced degrees at top universities. The client reached out to me because there was a need to address a knowledge deficit around two complex and technical concepts in academic writing. A basic knowledge about methods and methodologies was crucial for learner success at the graduate level. Learners would also be expected to elaborate their own methods and methodologies in application materials for graduate school. Working with the client, we determined that it would be useful for users if we built a learning solution to address this knowledge gap.

The client understood the value of this eLearning experience and signed off to proceed with the solution.

Process

After working with the client to determine the issues related to users understandings of methods and methodologies, I met and consulted with several Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), including department instructors and graduate advisors. We defined the goal of the project and discussed the specific steps needed to provide up-to-date and relevant information about inclusive language for adult learners.

Because these concepts can be technical and abstract, I created an avatar to help learners visualize how to use methods and methodologies. I also employed visually engaging graphics and colors to turn what can be a dry topic into something more creative and stimulating.

I piloted an early version of the module with a handful of users and discussed their responses with my client. Their feedback was positive and included suggestions for making the course more comprehensive, including the addition of methods and methodologies in STEM, the Humanities, and Social Sciences.

After incorporating their feedback, I developed the entire project in Articulate Storyline 360.

xAPI, the LRS, and JavaScript

Tracking learner experiences and collecting user data was important for the purposes of this project, so I implemented custom xAPI to track the free text response questions at the end of the module.

The LRS captured the free text response data. The client would be able to see this data and collate the free-text responses for users. The final assessment would be important for instructors to determine where users were still struggling. This data would help them determine the best resources for individual learners given the kind of free text response they provided.
